A great 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit near the coast of Ecuador on April 16, 2016, at 23:58:34 UTC, at a depth of 0 km, reported Geoscience Australia (not finalized).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a Tsunami Threat Message on April 16, 2016, at 0004 UTC, that hazardous tsunami waves were possible along the coasts of Ecuador and Colombia.
